AUWE Bristol inspire the next generation to solve global challenges

Palm oil is a versatile product which has become increasingly popular as an ingredient in foods such as
biscuits and chocolate, as well as toiletries including shampoo and toothpaste. To meet this demand, a huge
industry has developed, where habitats and biodiverse landscapes are destroyed to make room for oil palm
plantations, thus threatening the wildlife that lives there, with extinction. A team of scientists at the
University of West of England in Bristol, is working to combat this by using the Bird’s Nest Fern to return
native diversity back into the heart of the forests.
The UWE scientists also hope that the work they do with local schools can inspire the next generation to
become passionate about solving the world’s biggest issues. Dr Debbie Lewis knows how vital educating
children on these topics from a young age is “It’s important, these kids are going to be our future
scientists, they are going to be our future policy makers".
